California is basically a failed state run by greedy sociopaths. There is no longer any redeeming quality that one could list when discussing the state. In a further sign of the decline and fall of Western civilization, one of the busiest freeways in the entire country was destroyed by a fire in a homeless encampment.
It’s impossible to overstate what a disastrous failure of liberalism this is. The I-10 freeway in Los Angeles is now shut down “indefinitely” because of a hobo campfire.
The State of California, currently run by a governor with perfect hair who desperately wants to replace Joe Biden on the Democrat ticket in 2024, allowed this disaster to happen. The area beneath this particular section of the 10 freeway was being used as a storage yard for wooden shipping pallets. It never occurred to anyone in California’s state government or in the Los Angeles County government or the City of Los Angeles government that storing massive stacks of dry wooden pallets in a desert climate underneath a freeway might be a bad idea.
This has been going on for years. But more recently, especially since the drug overdose death of George Floyd, the homeless population in California has exploded. They set up tent cities beneath freeways. In this particular case, they cut through the fence at the wooden pallet storage yard and set up an entire tent city inside. They smoke crack and fentanyl and meth and other junk all day long, and they cook their food on open campfires.
While the preliminary investigation says that “arson” was the likely cause of the fire, what are the chances that it was just some careless crackhead with an open campfire next to the gigantic stacks of wooden pallets? At any rate, the fire burned for a good 90 minutes, complete with explosions and flames shooting out from under the freeway for a good 20 to 30 feet into the air as cars were initially driving past.
No one in California’s overbearing government that tries to pry into every area of every person’s life in order to sell them another permit ever bothered to put a stop to the gigantic pallet storage yard. No one ever showed up and told the homeless drug addicts to GTFO because they are a fire hazard and a public menace. The city, county, and state governments allowed this to happen.
As a result, the concrete and rebar holding the 10 freeway up off the ground has been structurally compromised. The fire burned so hot and for so long that it melted the rebar in the internal support structures of the freeway. So, the 300,000 cars per day that use the 10 freeway to get to work now have to find an alternate route on the already-congested streets of Los Angeles.
It’s impossible to understate how much of a disaster this is. It would be like having a major bridge across the Mississippi River collapse, or a major cave-in at the Lincoln Tunnel in Manhattan. And again, this was allowed to happen by Democrat governance. They could have gotten every homeless person off the streets and restored to life for less than what it’s now going to cost to rebuild the 10 freeway.
